Position Summary
The Assistant Principal for Chinese Curriculum provides strategic and instructional leadership across the Chinese program in the Elementary School. This includes curriculum planning, implementation, assessment, teacher development, and the integration of student-centered bilingual learning experiences.
Working closely with the Assistant Principals for International Curriculum and Wellbeing, this position ensures coherence between Chinese and international curricula, promotes high standards of teaching and learning, and supports the holistic development of every student.
The role also encompasses liaison responsibilities with education authorities, ensuring BIBA maintains compliance with Chinese education standards while achieving excellence within an international bilingual context.
Responsibilities as a Leader at BIBA
? Collaborate with the Senior Management Team to uphold the mission and vision of BIBA and ensure exceptional leadership across the Elementary School.
? Lead with integrity, professionalism, and high expectations for staff and students.
? Assist in the daily operations of BIBA ES and manage delegated areas of responsibility effectively.
? Foster a safe, inclusive, and collaborative school culture that promotes academic excellence and wellbeing.
? Ensure that student-centered learning and bilingual education are at the core of all decisions.
? Support teacher growth through Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), coaching, and structured professional development.
? Contribute to the safeguarding and welfare of students, ensuring all staff are trained and vigilant in promoting student safety.
? Promote BIBA’s 4Rs—Respect, Responsibility, Rigor, and Relationships—through leadership practice, communication, and example.
? Participate actively in SMT meetings, Academic Committee sessions, and key school events.
Specific Role Responsibilities
? Provide leadership and oversight for the Chinese curriculum, instruction, and assessment across all elementary grade levels.
? Collaborate closely with the Assistant Principals of International Curriculum and Wellbeing to ensure horizontal and vertical alignment between the Chinese and International programs, fostering coherence, shared standards, and balanced bilingual learning.
? Lead curriculum design and review, ensuring clear scope and sequence, vertical alignment, and alignment with national and international benchmarks.
? Supervise Chinese Curriculum Coordinators and provide leadership, guidance, and support to ensure consistency and excellence across all subject areas.
? Oversee the continued development and quality assurance of Chinese Language Arts, Chinese Mathematics, and Chinese Arts programs, ensuring innovation and high standards of teaching and learning.
? Promote instructional innovation and student-centered practices through differentiated teaching, project-based learning, and cross-disciplinary collaboration.
? Mentor and support Chinese teachers in planning, instruction, and assessment practices aligned with BIBA’s vision for excellence.
? Oversee Chinese literacy development, emphasizing research-based practices such as the Science of Reading and explicit language instruction.
? Conduct regular classroom walkthroughs, lesson observations, and teacher appraisals to ensure effective teaching and strong student engagement.
? Support admissions and placement by coordinating Chinese language assessments for new students and providing professional input for class placements.
? Collaborate with the APs of International Curriculum & Wellbeing to ensure coordinated academic and social-emotional support for students.
? Lead major cultural and academic initiatives such as Chinese New Year celebrations, calligraphy contests, and reading festivals that enhance bilingual identity and community pride.
Team Responsibilities
? Collaborate on the planning, development, and evaluation of the overall Elementary School program.
? Ensure consistency and quality across the division through shared decision-making and collaborative leadership.
? Contribute to staffing, scheduling, and class list development in partnership with the Principal and SMT.
? Participate in ongoing data analysis and school improvement initiatives.
? Co-lead professional learning planning, teacher evaluation, and staff development initiatives.
? Ensure policy implementation and support documentation for accreditation (WASC, Chinese Education Bureau, and internal audits).
? Recommend instructional resources, textbooks, and technology that enhance Chinese language and literacy instruction.
? Support alignment of policies, curriculum standards, and learning expectations across both Chinese and International divisions.
? Contribute to the organization of major events, parent engagement sessions, and academic showcases that highlight student learning and cultural exchange.
Strategic Leadership & Culture Building
? Collaborate with the SMT to enact BIBA’s mission and strategic objectives.
? Champion a school culture that values bilingualism, academic rigor, and mutual respect.
? Maintain visibility and accessibility among students, staff, and parents.
? Lead by example in modeling reflective, adaptive, and student-centered leadership.
? Foster a professional environment that encourages innovation, collaboration, and shared accountability for student success.
Curriculum, Teaching & Learning
? Provide strategic leadership for the design, delivery, and review of the Chinese curriculum.
? Ensure curriculum delivery reflects effective pedagogy, clear learning progressions, and high expectations for student achievement.
? Integrate student-centered approaches, explicit literacy instruction, and bilingual strategies that promote language transfer and comprehension.
? Collaborate with international program teachers to design learning experiences that build bridges between Chinese and international curricula.
? Use student performance data to inform teaching practices and track progress across grade levels.
? Co-lead initiatives on assessment, unit planning, and instructional alignment to strengthen school-wide coherence and quality.
Staff Development & Support
? Plan and facilitate ongoing professional learning for Chinese teachers that aligns with school goals and instructional priorities.
? Support new teacher induction and mentoring processes, ensuring smooth integration into the BIBA community.
? Conduct performance appraisals and guide teachers in setting growth-oriented goals.
? Promote reflective practice, collaborative inquiry, and professional excellence within the Chinese teaching team.
? Recognize and celebrate staff achievements to sustain morale and motivation.
Operations & Planning
? Assist with the creation of class lists, scheduling, staffing plans, and faculty assignments.
? Contribute to the coordination and execution of key school events, orientations, and student transitions (EY4–KG, KG–G1, G5–G6).
? Oversee liaison and documentation for Chinese Education Bureau requirements and school accreditation processes.
? Coordinate official visits, inspections, and reporting to ensure compliance with local and national education standards.
? Collaborate on school communications, including parent updates and newsletters, ensuring clarity and alignment across programs.
? Lead and support effective home–school communication within the Chinese program, ensuring parents are informed and engaged in their child’s learning journey through regular updates, meetings, and workshops.

Preferred Qualifications & Experience
? Master’s degree in Education, Chinese Language/Literature, Linguistics, or related field (Ed.S/Ed.D preferred).
? Minimum 8 years of teaching experience and 3+ years in a leadership capacity within a bilingual or international school.
? Strong understanding of the Chinese National Curriculum and bilingual education methodologies.
? Proven experience in curriculum leadership, instructional improvement, and teacher development.
? Fluency in Mandarin and English, with excellent communication and intercultural skills.
? Experience with educational accreditation (WASC, Chinese Education Bureau) is an advantage.
